What Actually Defines the Thoi Son Experience

  • The Tien River approach: arriving by motorboat from My Tho gives the island context as part of a working river system rather than just another garden attraction.
  • The sampan canals: small hand-rowed boats move through narrow nipa-palm waterways where the experience feels very different from the wider river crossing.
  • Fruit-garden culture: longan, rambutan, citrus, mango and other tropical crops shape both the landscape and visitor tastings, with July–October especially productive.
  • Đờn ca tài tử: short performances introduce the Southern Vietnamese music tradition recognized by UNESCO, although the art form—not Thoi Son Islet itself—is the listed intangible heritage.
  • A community tourism economy: honey tea, fruit tasting, handicrafts, food and boat services support local households, but they also make the visitor route more commercial than many first-time travelers expect.

Opening hours:

Tourism Services Are Generally 07:00–18:00The current Dong Thap tourism portal lists the Thoi Son tourism area and several individual visitor points from 07:00 to 18:00, with around 120 minutes suggested for a standard visit.Thoi Son is an inhabited island rather than a fenced park, so these hours should be understood as the normal operating window for visitor services—not a claim that the island itself physically closes at 18:00.If you plan to arrive near opening or late in the afternoon, arrange boat transport and specific garden activities in advance because individual operators may use shorter service hours.

Entrance Ticket:

100,000 VND

Thoi Son Is an Island Community, Not One Gated Attraction

The most important planning point is structural: Thoi Son Islet is a large inhabited island with multiple gardens, tourism stops, piers and service operators. There is no single turnstile where one ticket unlocks every experience.

The current Dong Thap tourism portal lists the main Thoi Son tourism area at 50,000–100,000 VND, while some individual fruit-garden and tourism points on the island are listed as free. Boat trips, rowing services, meals and organized tours can be priced separately.

That is why two travelers can truthfully report very different “Thoi Son prices.” Ask what a quoted amount actually includes instead of assuming it is an island admission fee.

Take the Boat from My Tho on a First Visit

Thoi Son can be reached by road via the Rach Mieu Bridge connection, but the classic first visit makes more sense by water.

The provincial tourism portal places the boat journey from My Tho at about 20 minutes. Crossing the Tien River shows floating traffic, riverside development and the relationship between My Tho and the island before you enter the narrow canals.

Road access is useful if you are staying on Thoi Son, traveling by motorbike or want to explore the island independently. But arriving by road does not replace the small sampan experience; the two serve different purposes.

The Sampan Ride Is the Most Photographed Part — and the Most Misunderstood

The hand-rowed boat route passes through narrow channels shaded by nipa palms and orchard vegetation. It is the scene most travelers associate with Thoi Son and the wider My Tho Mekong experience.

Published trip lengths are inconsistent. VnExpress describes the popular Ba Ngoan canal segment as roughly 10–15 minutes, while recent reporting on the rowing service describes a trip of around 30 minutes. Different routes and operators therefore should not be treated as one fixed-duration product.

When booking independently, ask how long the sampan section lasts and whether waiting time is likely. The island’s tourism association acknowledged in August 2026 that rowing services can become overloaded during busy periods.

The Rowing Fare Is Changing in October 2026

As of 25 August 2026, the established rowing-service rate remains 15,000 VND per trip, a figure that had remained unchanged for more than 17 years.

Local authorities, the tourism association and the rowing-boat union have agreed that the rate will increase to 30,000 VND per trip from 1 October 2026. A further rise toward 50,000 VND has been discussed as part of a phased adjustment.

This is a service rate, not a universal entrance ticket for the island. If you visit after September 2026, check the current posted charge rather than relying on an older guide.

Honey Tea, Fruit and Music Are Genuine Local Products — but the Sequence Is Curated

Most organized tours move visitors through a predictable sequence: bee garden, honey tea, fruit tasting, đờn ca tài tử, handicrafts or candy, then a sampan ride.

The products and performances are real parts of the local tourism economy, but the presentation is designed for short group visits. Current traveler reviews show both reactions: some enjoy the variety and easy introduction to Delta culture, while others feel the stops are too sales-driven.

The useful approach is not to label everything “authentic” or “fake.” Decide how much of the curated circuit you want. If orchards and waterways matter most, tell your guide or boat operator to protect time for those experiences and shorten optional shopping stops.

Do Not Confuse Đờn Ca Tài Tử’s UNESCO Status with an Island Heritage Listing

Visitors commonly hear traditional đờn ca tài tử while eating fruit on Thoi Son. The musical tradition is important enough to be inscribed by UNESCO as Art of Đờn ca tài tử music and song in southern Viet Nam.

That UNESCO recognition belongs to the Southern Vietnamese art form across the region. It does not mean Thoi Son Islet itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A short tourist performance is also only an introduction to the tradition. Listen to the instruments and vocal style rather than treating the music as background entertainment for a fruit stop.

July–October Is Better if Fruit Is a Main Reason to Go

Fruit trees grow on the island throughout the year, but current 2026 local travel guidance identifies roughly July to October as a particularly good fruit-ripening period.

What is available on a specific day still depends on the garden, crop cycle and weather. A “fruit garden visit” may mean tasting prepared seasonal fruit rather than freely picking any fruit you see from the trees.

If picking matters to you, confirm that activity with the garden or operator before arriving instead of assuming it is included in every island tour.

Tour-Group Convenience Comes with a Trade-Off

Thoi Son is one of the easiest Mekong Delta experiences to reach from Ho Chi Minh City, which is exactly why it receives so many organized groups.

A group tour is efficient: transport, river boat, tastings, sampan and lunch can all be arranged in one package. The trade-off is fixed pacing, more waiting around other groups and a greater chance that your route follows the same commercial stops as everyone else.

Independent travelers staying in My Tho have more control. Starting near the 07:00 opening period or remaining later in the afternoon can provide a calmer island experience than arriving with the main day-tour flow.

The Island Is Easy for Families, but Boat Transfers Still Need Attention

Thoi Son is physically easier than a hiking or cave attraction, and the short activity sequence works well for many families. The main practical challenge is repeatedly stepping between docks, motorboats and low sampans.

Young children and older travelers should have a free hand for boarding. Avoid carrying bulky bags, and use footwear that stays secure when stepping into a small boat.

If anyone in the group has significant mobility limitations, ask the operator which stops require sampan boarding, uneven garden paths or repeated boat transfers before buying a full package.

Two Hours Covers the Standard Circuit; More Time Changes the Experience

The provincial tourism portal gives 120 minutes as a normal visit duration, which is enough for the common sampling circuit.

Allow around 2–3 hours if visiting independently and you want the river crossing, sampan, one or two garden stops and unhurried walking. Lunch, cycling, fishing activities or an overnight stay turn Thoi Son into a longer rural experience rather than a short attraction stop.

The island is more rewarding when you choose fewer activities and give them time than when you try to collect every item listed on a tour brochure.

Go Early for a Calmer Visit; July–October for Stronger Fruit Experiences

For most independent visitors, early morning after the 07:00 service opening is the strongest default. Temperatures are lower and you can begin the river-and-garden circuit before the island receives more organized day-trip traffic.

For fruit-focused travel, July to October is especially useful because several local orchard crops enter strong harvest periods. The island remains visitable year-round, and the canals, honey stops and cultural experiences do not depend on one short season.

Rainy-season showers can interrupt open-boat sections, so keep a light rain layer accessible rather than packed deep inside your bag.

From Alluvial Orchard Island to a Major Mekong Tourism Stop

Thoi Son is a large alluvial island formed within the Tien River system. Its fertile soil supported orchards, fishing and river-based livelihoods long before tourism became a major source of income.

The island is traditionally known as Con Lan, or Unicorn Islet, within the Long–Lan–Quy–Phung naming of four well-known islets around the My Tho–Ben Tre river area.

Current 2026 travel reporting notes that organized ecotourism developed strongly from the 1990s. Today, fruit gardens, rowing boats, honey products, music performances, food services and handicraft stops form a community-based tourism economy layered onto the island’s residential and agricultural landscape.

How to Avoid the Most Common Expectation Mismatches

  • Ask what your price includes. Island tourism fees, motorboat transport, sampan, food and individual garden activities are not one universal ticket.
  • Protect time for the canals. If the sampan and orchards are your priority, shorten optional shopping stops rather than rushing the part you came to see.
  • Visit early if you are independent. The main tourism services open around 07:00, before larger day-tour flows build later in the day.
  • Check the rowing fare after September 2026. The agreed rate changes from 15,000 VND to 30,000 VND per trip on 1 October 2026.
  • Do not assume fruit picking is included. Seasonal tasting is common; pick-your-own access depends on the individual garden.
  • Treat purchases and gratuities as separate decisions. Honey, candy, fruit products and souvenirs are optional even when they appear naturally in the tour sequence.

FAQ

Q: How much does it cost to visit Thoi Son Islet?
There is no single island-wide ticket. The current provincial tourism portal lists the main tourism area at 50,000–100,000 VND, while some individual gardens are free and boat, food or tour services may be charged separately.
Q: What are the opening hours for Thoi Son Islet?
Main visitor services are currently listed from 07:00 to 18:00. Thoi Son is an inhabited island, so these are tourism-service hours rather than a physical island closure.
Q: How long should I spend on Thoi Son Islet?
About 2–3 hours works well for a first visit with the river crossing, sampan, fruit or honey stop and some walking. The standard organized circuit can be completed in about two hours.
Q: Is Thoi Son Islet the same as Unicorn Island?
Yes. Thoi Son is also known as Con Lan or Unicorn Island, one of the four Long–Lan–Quy–Phung islets associated with this part of the Tien River.
Q: Can I reach Thoi Son Islet without a boat?
Yes. Road access is possible via the Rach Mieu Bridge connection. For a first visit, however, arriving by boat from My Tho gives better context for the river landscape and still allows you to add the narrow-canal sampan experience.
Q: How long is the sampan ride?
It varies by route and operator. Current sources describe common rides from roughly 10–15 minutes to around 30 minutes, so confirm the actual canal route if the sampan is a major reason for your visit.
Q: Is Thoi Son Islet too touristy?
It is one of the most developed visitor stops near My Tho, and the standard route is highly curated for tour groups. The orchards, canals, music and local products are real; visiting independently or choosing fewer commercial stops gives you more control over the experience.
Q: What is the best season for fruit on Thoi Son Islet?
Fruit grows through the year, but July to October is a particularly useful period for ripe orchard produce. Exact fruit availability still depends on the garden and crop cycle.
