Detailed Itinerary

8:00 AM – Hotel Pickup & Departure

Your guide and driver will collect you from your hotel in Đồng Hới at 8:00 AM sharp. Before setting off, your guide will walk through the day’s plan, share a few practical tips on footwear and layering, and answer any questions. The early start is intentional — arriving at Paradise Cave ahead of the main tour groups means a quieter, more spacious experience inside.

8:00 – 9:15 AM – Drive to Paradise Cave (75 minutes)

From Đồng Hới, the drive covers approximately 60–68 km heading northwest, following the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Road toward Paradise Cave — around 1 hour 15 minutes in total. The landscape shifts gradually as the city gives way to the old-growth forest and towering limestone karst formations of Phong Nha–Kẻ Bàng National Park. This is one of the largest primary forest reserves remaining in Vietnam, and the drive through it is already worth paying attention to.

9:15 – 9:30 AM – Tickets & Electric Buggy Ride

Your guide handles ticket purchase at the entrance gate. The group then boards the electric buggy (included in the ticket price) for a relaxed 1.6 km ride beneath the forest canopy to the base of the mountain. Beyond the practical convenience of saving your legs for the staircase ahead, the buggy ride itself is a pleasant first encounter with the reserve — towering trees, birdsong, and cool forest air that signal you are somewhere genuinely wild.

9:30 – 9:50 AM – The Staircase: ~500 Steps to the Cave Entrance

From the buggy drop-off point, the group climbs approximately 500 steps up a concrete and wooden staircase to reach the entrance of Paradise Cave, set at nearly 200 metres above sea level. The ascent takes around 15–20 minutes at a comfortable pace, with shaded rest points at regular intervals. 11:50 AM – 12:20 PM – Drive to Phong Nha Town (30 minutes)

The vehicle heads back approximately 20–30 km to Phong Nha town, a short 30-minute drive. This small riverside settlement serves as the tourism hub for the national park, with a good range of local restaurants clustered around the main street and the Son River bank.

12:20 – 1:50 PM – Lunch Break in Phong Nha Town (90 minutes)

A 90-minute stop for lunch and rest — well-earned after a morning of staircase climbing and cave exploration. Your guide will point you toward a selection of reliable local restaurants. The food in Phong Nha is unpretentious and genuinely regional: look out for chao canh (Quang Binh-style rice soup with pork and fish cake), banh xeo (sizzling rice-flour pancakes), and grilled free-range chicken with salt and cheo paste — a local specialty that regularly surprises guests. Lunch is self-funded; budget approximately 80,000–200,000 VND per person.

1:50 – 2:00 PM – Drive to Phong Nha Cave Boat Pier (10 minutes)

2:00 – 2:30 PM – Scenic Cruise Along the Son River (30 minutes)

2:30 – 3:30 PM – Inside Phong Nha Cave: The Underground River (60 minutes)

As the boat reaches the cave mouth — roughly 20–25 metres wide and 10 metres tall — the engine cuts out and the boatman switches to hand-paddling. From this point forward, the group glides in near-silence through approximately 1,500 metres of underground river, the maximum depth open to standard visitors. Coloured lights illuminate formations that have been named the Lion, the Unicorn, the Buddha, and the Royal Throne for the shapes their outlines suggest. The centrepiece is Hang Cung Dinh (the Court Grotto), where stalactite columns rising over 20 metres create the impression of standing inside an underground palace. Your guide points out the ancient Cham inscriptions in Hang Bi Ky — carved into the cave walls centuries before modern explorers ever reached this place.

3:30 – 4:00 PM – The Dry Cave & Return to the Pier (30 minutes)

On the return journey, the boat pauses to let passengers step ashore and explore the dry cave chamber set just inside the cave’s exit section. Unlike the wet cave, this chamber has no underground river — but its stalactite and stalagmite display is, if anything, even more visually arresting: tier upon tier of formations lit from above by natural light filtering through the limestone, blending with the artificial lighting to produce a luminous, almost theatrical effect. Many guests describe this as the single most memorable moment of the entire Phong Nha visit. Once the group has had time to explore and photograph, the boat completes the return journey to the Son River pier.

4:00 – 5:15 PM – Return Transfer to Đồng Hới (75 minutes)

The vehicle departs the pier for the return drive to Đồng Hới — approximately 75 minutes. Expected drop-off at your hotel is around 5:15 PM. Your guide is happy to suggest dinner spots, riverfront cafés, or evening activities in Đồng Hới to round out the day.
