Start at the Phong Nha tourism pier

The normal visit begins at the Phong Nha tourism centre and boat pier rather than at a road entrance beside the cave mouth.

This matters because the cave ticket and boat service are separate parts of the visit. Buy or confirm both before boarding so you understand the full cost from the beginning.

The cave ticket and boat ticket are charged differently

The current adult cave admission is 150,000 VND per person.

The standard Phong Nha Cave boat service is 700,000 VND per boat for the round trip, with a maximum capacity of 12 passengers.

The boat fee is therefore a group cost rather than a per-person entrance fee. If you are traveling alone or as a couple, ask staff at the pier whether boat sharing is possible that day rather than assuming another group will automatically be available.

The Son River journey is part of the attraction

The cave experience starts before you reach the cave mouth.

The boat travels along the Son River through the Phong Nha landscape before turning toward the limestone entrance. This transition from open river to enclosed cave is one of the reasons Phong Nha feels different from attractions where visitors simply walk from a car park into a cavern.

Use this part of the journey to enjoy the landscape rather than treating it only as transport to the cave.

Inside the cave, the experience becomes much quieter

Once the boat enters the underground section, the experience changes from open-river travel to cave navigation.

The normal tourist route currently covers approximately 1,200 metres inside the underground river. The quieter rowing section allows visitors to see the cave formations from water level without needing a long underground walk.

This is the core Phong Nha Cave experience and the part worth protecting in your schedule. Do not rush the visit simply to add several other attractions on the same morning.

The dry cave section comes near the end

Phong Nha Cave is not entirely experienced from the boat.

On the return section, visitors can leave the boat and explore dry chambers on foot before rejoining the boat journey back toward the pier.

This provides a useful contrast: first you see the cave from the underground river, then you experience the formations from ground level.

Tien Son Cave is an optional add-on, not part of the basic ticket

Tien Son Cave sits in the same visitor area but uses a separate entrance ticket.

The current Tien Son admission is 80,000 VND per person. If you plan to visit both Phong Nha Cave and Tien Son Cave, the combined boat service is currently 750,000 VND per boat for up to 12 passengers, instead of the 700,000 VND Phong Nha-only boat service.

Tien Son is a dry cave and involves more climbing than the main boat-oriented Phong Nha route. Add it when you want a fuller cave visit, not simply because it is nearby.

Allow about 2.5 hours for Phong Nha Cave itself

Current official guidance suggests approximately 2.5 hours for the normal Phong Nha Cave experience.

That includes the river journey, underground route, dry-cave stop and return to the pier. If you add Tien Son, allow additional time for the climb and cave visit rather than trying to fit both into the same 2.5-hour window.

The main route is easier than a trekking cave, but it is not completely step-free

Phong Nha Cave is largely boat-based, which makes the primary experience less physically demanding than trekking attractions in the national park.

However, boarding and leaving the boat, walking through the dry chamber and adding Tien Son can still involve steps and uneven surfaces. Visitors with limited mobility should ask staff about the current boarding arrangement and avoid assuming the entire visit is wheelchair accessible.

Heavy rain can change operations quickly

Do not treat September–November as a fixed annual closure period.

The cave normally operates on a seasonal daily timetable, but heavy rain, flooding and high river levels can temporarily suspend boat access. During wet weather, check the current operating status before traveling to the pier.

Getting there

The visitor departure point is in the Phong Nha tourism area in Phong Nha Commune, Quang Tri Province.

If you are staying in Phong Nha, arrange your transport to the tourism centre and boat pier rather than navigating directly to the cave coordinates. The pier is the operational starting point for the normal visitor route.

Best Time to Visit

For normal conditions, visit earlier in the day if you want more flexibility for boat departure, a slower cave visit or an optional Tien Son add-on.

During wet weather, the most important factor is not the month but the current river level and operating status. Heavy rainfall can temporarily suspend boat access, so check conditions before leaving for the pier after significant rain.

Heritage Context

Phong Nha Cave is part of the wider Phong Nha–Ke Bang heritage landscape. The World Heritage property was first inscribed in 2003, expanded in 2015, and became a transboundary property with Hin Nam No National Park in Laos in 2025.

For visitors, that context is useful because the cave is not an isolated attraction: it is one accessible window into a much larger limestone, underground-river and biodiversity system.

Visitor Tips

• Budget for two charges. The cave ticket is per person; the boat is charged per boat.
• Ask about sharing at the pier if your group is small. Do not assume sharing is guaranteed on every departure.
• Allow about 2.5 hours for Phong Nha Cave alone. Add extra time if you include Tien Son.
• Check operations after heavy rain. High river levels can temporarily stop boat access even though there is no fixed annual rainy-season closure.
• Decide on Tien Son before boarding. The combined boat service uses a different price from the Phong Nha-only boat trip.
