What Changes the Visit Beyond the Famous Tank Gate

• The building is part of the history: Ngô Viết Thụ’s modernist design, screens, reception rooms and preserved interiors explain how the palace functioned before 1975.
• The bunker changes the tone: moving from formal state rooms into communications and command spaces shows the contrast between ceremony above ground and wartime operations below.
• The rooftop completes the sequence: the helipad and aircraft display work best after the interior route, not as an isolated photo stop.
• The separate 1868–1966 exhibition adds context: it explains the transition from Norodom Palace to the current building and is easy to miss if you do not know it is in a different building.

There Is No Single Independence Palace Ticket

The current adult ticket structure has several options rather than one universal admission price.

Palace only: 40,000 VND. Palace + historical exhibition: 80,000 VND. Palace + electric car: 65,000 VND. Palace + exhibition + electric car: 105,000 VND.

If you are mainly interested in the preserved rooms, bunker and rooftop, the 40,000 VND ticket is enough. If you want the political and architectural story to make more sense, the 80,000 VND combined ticket is the stronger first-time choice.

After 16:00, Use the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Gate

The site remains open until 18:00, but not every ticket gate does.

The 135 Nam Ky Khoi Nghia ticket gate operates 07:00–18:00. The 106 Nguyen Du gate operates only 08:00–16:00.

This matters if you arrive late in the afternoon. After 16:00, go directly to the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia side instead of assuming both entrances remain available until closing.

Do Not Trust the Old 8:00–16:00 Hours Still Online

Several major travel websites still show older opening schedules such as 08:00–16:00 or 08:00–16:30.

The current official 2026 schedule is 07:00–18:00 daily. Use that as the site-wide visiting window, then remember that the Nguyen Du ticket gate closes earlier at 16:00.

This is one attraction where relying on an older highly ranked guide can send you to the wrong entrance at the wrong time.

The 1868–1966 Exhibition Is in a Separate Building

The combined ticket includes the thematic exhibition “From Norodom Palace to Independence Palace 1868–1966”, but it is not simply another room inside the main Palace route.

Recent visitors have reported nearly leaving without seeing it because they assumed the main building was the entire ticket.

If you buy the 80,000 VND combined ticket, check the site map or ask staff where the separate exhibition building is before you leave the grounds.

Follow the Palace from Ceremony Rooms Down to the War Bunker

The visit makes more sense when you treat the building as a sequence rather than a room checklist.

Start with the formal reception and state rooms, then continue through the presidential and working areas before moving down into the bunker and communications spaces.

The contrast is the point: upstairs you see the controlled image of government and ceremony; below ground you see radio rooms, maps and wartime command infrastructure.

Save the Rooftop and Helipad for the End

The rooftop works best as the final transition out of the interior sequence.

After the bunker and command rooms, the rooftop helipad and aircraft display give a clearer sense of the building as a functioning presidential compound rather than just a set of preserved rooms.

It is also one of the better places for architectural photography because you can relate the roofline, grounds and military history in one stop.

The Electric Car Tours the Grounds — Not the Palace

The electric car is an optional ride around the wider grounds, currently priced at 25,000 VND per ride when purchased separately.

It is useful for visitors who want to reduce walking across the grounds, but it does not transport you through the Palace interiors, bunker or rooftop.

Do not buy it expecting an indoor mobility solution. Its value is in the large outdoor site, not the vertical movement inside the building.

Park on Huyen Tran Cong Chua, Not at the Front Façade

Official visitor guidance directs car and motorbike parking to the Huyen Tran Cong Chua gate or nearby areas as instructed by site security.

If you arrive by vehicle, navigate for that side rather than circling the formal Nam Ky Khoi Nghia façade looking for a parking entrance.

A current official parking tariff was not verified, so check the posted rate on arrival instead of relying on old blog prices.

Use the Ground-Floor Restroom Before the Longer Route

Restrooms are available inside the site, and current visitor information also supports step-free facilities in parts of the main building.

For a longer visit, using the ground-floor restroom before continuing into the bunker, upper floors and separate exhibition is the simplest approach.

The grounds are extensive, so it is better to use facilities when they are convenient than assume the next section will be equally easy to access.

Casual Photos and Professional Shoots Follow Different Rules

Independence Palace introduced updated photography regulations from August 2026.

Casual souvenir photography is allowed only according to the site’s designated areas and current regulations. Professional or service photography, including wedding and yearbook shoots, requires separate registration and fees.

Do not assume a normal admission ticket gives blanket permission for a commercial-style photo session. Follow signage and staff instructions inside the rooms and around restricted areas.

Accessibility Is Partial, Not Something to Assume

Current visitor reports and facility information indicate elevators and step-free facilities in parts of the main building, but that does not mean every space is fully accessible.

The bunker, rooftop and some historic sections may still involve steps or access constraints.

If you depend on step-free access, confirm the current route with staff before buying a ticket based on the assumption that every major area can be reached by elevator.

One Hour Works Only If You Choose What to Skip

A fast Palace-only visit can fit into roughly 60 minutes if you move selectively through the main rooms, bunker and rooftop.

A more comfortable Palace visit is closer to 90 minutes. Add the separate historical exhibition and the total becomes closer to two hours for many first-time visitors.

If you use the audio guide or stop to study the architecture and documents, allow longer rather than trying to keep to an arbitrary “recommended duration.”

Go Early for Cooler Rooms and a Less Crowded Bunker

Early morning is the most practical time if you want a slower interior visit, easier photography and less heat while crossing the grounds.

The bunker and preserved rooms are easier to appreciate before larger groups build up. If you are visiting later, the key operational detail is the gate schedule: after 16:00, use the Nam Ky Khoi Nghia ticket entrance.

Because much of the experience is indoors, rain is less important than crowd level and outdoor heat. A hot midday visit is still possible, but save the large grounds for the cooler part of your route when practical.

From Norodom Palace to the Presidential Palace of 1966

The site began with Norodom Palace during the French colonial period. After political changes in the mid-20th century and damage to the earlier building, a new presidential palace was commissioned.

Architect Ngô Viết Thụ designed the current structure, which opened in 1966 and served as the presidential palace of South Vietnam.

The building became internationally associated with 30 April 1975, when tanks entered the palace grounds at the end of the war. Today the site preserves both the architecture of the 1960s state complex and the spaces associated with its final political chapter.

Small Choices That Prevent a Confusing Visit

• Choose the ticket before queuing. The 80,000 VND combined ticket is useful only if you actually visit the separate historical exhibition.
• After 16:00, use Nam Ky Khoi Nghia. The Nguyen Du ticket gate closes earlier.
• Park via Huyen Tran Cong Chua if arriving by vehicle. Do not search for parking at the formal front façade.
• Do the bunker and upper floors before spending too long in the grounds. The site covers more than 12 hectares and midday heat can make the outdoor portion more tiring.
• Wear respectful clothing. Current visitor rules prohibit shorts and sleeveless shirts.
• Do not bring bulky luggage. The site restricts large baggage and pets.
