What Actually Changes from One Ha Long Bay Cruise to Another

  • Route: VHL1 focuses on the classic near-port landscape and Thiên Cung–Đầu Gỗ area, while VHL2 reaches major stops such as Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top Island and Luon Cave.
  • Time on the bay: a short day cruise can show the limestone scenery, but a longer day or overnight itinerary gives more room for cave stops, viewpoints and water activities.
  • Departure port: Tuan Chau International Marina and Ha Long International Passenger Port are both major gateways, and port charges are separate from the government sightseeing fee unless your package explicitly includes them.
  • Crowd exposure: the most famous caves and islands can feel very busy when multiple day boats arrive together; overnight cruises have a better chance of being on the water before or after the main day-tour wave.
  • Photography: VHL2 is stronger if you specifically want the elevated Ti Top view, while overnight cruising adds the possibility of sunrise and sunset from the boat.

Opening hours:

Main daytime Ha Long Bay sightseeing journeys operate within the official 06:30–18:30 window. VHL8 coastal sightseeing operates 06:00–23:00. Actual cruise check-in and departure times vary by route, operator, departure port and port/weather clearance.

Choose the Route Before You Compare Cruise Prices

The route determines what you can actually see, so compare itineraries before comparing cabins or buffets.

VHL1 is the classic shorter sightseeing journey. Its official route includes Thiên Cung Grotto, Đầu Gỗ Cave, Chó Đá Islet, Ba Hang, Đỉnh Hương and Trống Mái. It works well when your priority is the iconic limestone scenery and a cave stop without committing most of the day.

VHL2 is the more useful first choice when you have a longer day. Its route includes attractions such as Ti Top Island, Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave and several other cave or lagoon areas. The extra time creates a more varied experience but also exposes you to the busiest visitor hotspots.

Other official routes serve different sections of the bay, cross-bay connections and specialised cruise products. Do not pay extra for a route number you do not understand; ask the operator to name the actual stops.

The 2026 Sightseeing Fee Is Only One Part of the Price

Current official adult sightseeing fees are 250,000 VND for VHL1, 250,000 VND for VHL2, 200,000 VND for VHL3, 200,000 VND for VHL4, 250,000 VND for VHL5, 150,000 VND for VHL6, 600,000 VND for VHL7 and 70,000 VND for VHL8.

Those are sightseeing fees, not complete cruise prices.

Your final cost can also include the passenger-port ticket, the boat fare, food, kayaking or bamboo boat activities, guide service, Hanoi transfer and—on an overnight cruise—the cabin and onboard programme.

When comparing two offers, ask for an itemised total rather than only asking “How much is the cruise?”

Check Which Port You Are Actually Departing From

Most visitors depart from either Tuan Chau International Marina or Ha Long International Passenger Port.

From 1 July 2026, Ha Long International Passenger Port charges 80,000 VND per person for a round-trip passenger ticket or 40,000 VND one way. That port fee is separate from the bay sightseeing fee unless your operator has already included it.

Tuan Chau remains a major departure hub with large waiting areas, parking, toilets, shops and cruise offices. Current traveler feedback repeatedly shows that buying from an informal sales stand without checking the exact boat and route can lead to confusion, so use the official ticketing or your confirmed cruise operator rather than accepting the first offer in the terminal.

Do Not Assume “Day Cruise” Means the Same Number of Hours

Day cruises are sold in several lengths, and the difference is not cosmetic.

A shorter cruise can work if your goal is simply to see the karst scenery and visit one cave area. A longer day gives enough time for a combination such as cave exploration, Ti Top or Luon Cave and lunch on board.

Official daytime sightseeing operates within the 06:30–18:30 window, but your actual departure time is set by the operator and port clearance. A tour sold as a full day from Hanoi may still spend substantially less than a full day on the water because road transfers are part of the advertised duration.

Overnight Is Worth Paying For Only If You Value Time on the Water

An overnight cruise is not automatically better because it has a cabin.

The real advantage is that you remain inside the bay after many day boats have returned to port and are already on the water before the next day-tour wave builds. This improves the chance of quieter deck time, sunrise, sunset and a slower pace between activities.

If you mainly want Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top and a few classic views, a well-run long day cruise can be enough. If the landscape itself is the reason for the trip, one night gives the bay more room to become the experience rather than just a sequence of stops.

Use Google Reviews to Check the Operator, Not Just the Bay

The main Ha Long Bay Google listing has thousands of reviews, but those reviews mix many different boats, routes and service levels.

For a commercial decision, the more useful review check is the exact cruise operator and vessel. Look for repeated comments about boarding organisation, whether the advertised itinerary was actually completed, food quality, cabin condition, activity charges and how the crew handled weather changes.

A five-star review of the bay itself tells you the scenery is impressive; it does not tell you whether a particular cruise is well run.

Tuan Chau Has Toilets, Waiting Areas and Parking — Use Them Before Boarding

Tuan Chau International Marina has established passenger facilities including toilets, waiting areas, shops and large parking areas. Current Google-sourced reviews also describe the terminal as spacious and generally easy to navigate, although seating and air-conditioning can feel stretched at peak times.

Use the toilet before boarding and buy anything essential before your vessel leaves. A day cruise normally has onboard facilities, but a busy boarding sequence is easier if you are not trying to find a restroom at the last minute.

Parking is available, but this guide does not quote a fixed parking fee because a current official vehicle tariff was not verified.

For Photography, Match the Route to the Shot You Want

If you want a high viewpoint over the bay, VHL2 and Ti Top Island matter more than simply choosing a more expensive boat.

If you want classic limestone-islet compositions from deck level, both shorter and longer routes can deliver them. If you want sunrise or sunset without watching the clock for a port return, overnight is the more logical upgrade.

Haze, cloud and changing light are part of northern Vietnam’s coastal weather. A grey day can flatten long-distance views but still work well inside caves and between nearby karst towers, so do not judge the whole trip only by the sky at the port.

Weather Can Cancel the Cruise Even When Your Booking Is Confirmed

Ha Long Bay cruises operate under port and weather-safety clearance.

Quang Ninh authorities can suspend sightseeing and overnight operations when storms, strong winds or other dangerous conditions affect the bay. This is an operational safety decision, not something a cruise company can override.

If your trip falls in the storm season, keep the day around Ha Long flexible and check messages from the operator before leaving Hanoi. A confirmed booking does not guarantee departure if the port suspends permits.

Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay Are Now More Connected — but They Are Still Different Choices

Cross-bay cruise operations between Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay expanded in 2026, giving some licensed itineraries more flexibility.

That does not make the names interchangeable. Ha Long Bay remains the correct choice if your priority is the classic UNESCO-listed Ha Long attractions such as Sung Sot, Ti Top and the traditional VHL routes. Lan Ha-oriented cruises often emphasise a different section of the karst seascape around Cat Ba.

Before booking, look at the actual stop list rather than assuming every vessel marketed with “Ha Long” in the title follows the same bay.

Best Time Depends on What You Want from the Bay

For a day cruise, an earlier departure gives more margin for cave visits and island stops before the afternoon return window.

For photography and a slower atmosphere, an overnight cruise adds sunset, early morning and time on the water outside much of the main day-tour flow.

Summer can bring strong heat, heavy rain and storm disruption; cooler months can bring haze or low cloud. Because sailing permission can change for safety reasons, the best practical rule is to choose the cruise format first, then check the short-range marine weather close to departure.

Why Ha Long Bay Is More Than a Scenic Cruise

Ha Long Bay has long been recognised internationally for its exceptional limestone karst seascape. UNESCO first inscribed Ha Long Bay as a World Heritage property in 1994, with its geological values recognised through a later extension.

In 2023, the World Heritage property was expanded into the trans-provincial Ha Long Bay–Cat Ba Archipelago, linking the Quang Ninh and Hai Phong components of the same wider karst landscape.

For visitors, the practical point is that the protected heritage area is larger and more complex than the view from one cruise route. A single day cruise shows selected highlights rather than “all of Ha Long Bay.”

Questions to Ask Before You Pay for a Cruise

  • Which official route is this? Ask for VHL1, VHL2 or the actual stop list instead of accepting “Ha Long Bay tour” as enough detail.
  • Are sightseeing and port fees included? A low headline price is not useful if mandatory fees are added at the terminal.
  • How many hours are actually on the water? A Hanoi “full-day tour” includes road-transfer time.
  • Which port and terminal do I use? Tuan Chau and Ha Long International Passenger Port are different departure points.
  • What happens if weather closes the bay? Check the operator’s rescheduling/refund process before booking during storm season.
  • Use the terminal toilet before boarding. It is a small step that makes a crowded check-in much easier.
  • For photos, choose the itinerary first. Ti Top viewpoint requires the right route; sunrise and sunset are strongest reasons to consider an overnight cruise.

FAQ

Q: How much is the Ha Long Bay entrance ticket?
There is no single ticket price. Current adult sightseeing fees are 250,000 VND for VHL1, 250,000 VND for VHL2, 200,000 VND for VHL3, 200,000 VND for VHL4, 250,000 VND for VHL5, 150,000 VND for VHL6, 600,000 VND for VHL7 and 70,000 VND for VHL8. Boat fares and applicable port charges are separate unless your cruise package includes them.
Q: What are Ha Long Bay opening hours?
The main official daytime sightseeing window is 06:30–18:30. VHL8 coastal sightseeing operates from 06:00 to 23:00. Your actual boat departure time depends on the operator, route, port and safety clearance.
Q: Which Ha Long Bay route is best for a first visit?
VHL1 works well for a shorter classic cruise with Thiên Cung and Đầu Gỗ. VHL2 is the stronger choice when you have more time and want major stops such as Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top Island and Luon Cave.
Q: Is an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise worth it?
It is worth the extra cost if you value sunset, sunrise, quieter hours on the water and a slower pace. If your priority is only the main caves and viewpoints, a well-planned longer day cruise may be enough.
Q: Where do Ha Long Bay cruises depart?
Two major gateways are Tuan Chau International Marina and Ha Long International Passenger Port. Confirm the exact port and terminal before travel because they are not interchangeable.
Q: Are there toilets and parking at Tuan Chau Marina?
Yes. The terminal has toilets, waiting areas and parking. Use the restroom before boarding, especially during busy periods. A current official parking tariff was not verified, so check the posted charge on arrival.
Q: Can Ha Long Bay cruises be cancelled because of weather?
Yes. Authorities can suspend sightseeing and overnight departures when storms, strong winds or other unsafe marine conditions affect the bay. Operators cannot sail without port clearance.
